LEGACY Will Officially Begin Filming Next Week; Fan-Art May Hint At Costume Design

We had heard that cameras were set to roll on Superman: Legacy in early March, and During Friday’s Q4 earnings call, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav revealed that the DCU reboot will officially begin filming next week.

The confirmation comes shortly after director James Gunn shared a behind-the-scenes look at the main cast following their first table read.

Though Zaslav sounded optimistic about Legacy and the future of the new DCU in general, he admitted that the studio hasn’t been performing as well as it could be overall.

“Bottom line, the studio has really been underperforming — including at the end of the year where we had some real struggle — but we’re very optimistic about this year, and it has given us the chance to have a lot of upside in the next two years.”

Gunnar Wiedenfels, Warner Bros. Discovery’s CFO, also noted that the studio has been facing “challenges” when it comes to its superhero output.

“On the film side, obviously this is going to continue to be a hit-driven business. Just last year was a great example, with the greatest success in the film studio’s history, and some real challenges across the industry on the on the superhero side. The Color Purple” and the superhero sequel Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom — weren’t great performers.”

Some photos from the recent table read indicated that the Man of Steel’s (David Corenswet) new costume will feature a Kingdom Come-style “S” logo, and artist Kevin Tran has now shared his take on how the new suit could look based on a (supposedly reliable) Reddit description.

This may not be accurate, but it could give us some idea of how the new costume will look in live-action.

Superman: Legacy will also star Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, along with Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho.

More recently, Sara Sampaio signed on to play Lex’s assistant/lover Eve Teschmacher, and Skyler Gisondo has been cast as Jimmy Olsen.

Members of the anti-hero team The Authority are also expected to appear, and María Gabriela de Faría (Animal Control) has been cast as Angela Spica/The Engineer.

Milly Alcock’s Supergirl is also rumored to make her debut ahead of her own Woman of Tomorrow movie, but that’s yet to be confirmed.

We’re still not sure exactly how these other superheroes will factor into the story, but Gunn has previously revealed that Superman’s dual-life as both Clark Kent and the Man of Steel will be explored in the film, suggesting that these characters will be his “super friends.” Whether they’ll be part of an actual team or not remains to be seen.

“Superman: Legacy is the true foundation of our creative vision for the DC Universe. Not only is Superman an iconic part of DC lore, he is also a favorite character for comic book readers, viewers of earlier movies, and fans around the world,” said Gunn during the DCU slate announcement. “I can’t wait to introduce our version of Superman who audiences will be able to follow and get to know across films, movies, animation and gaming.”
