OBI-WAN KENOBI Season 2 Looks Highly Unlikely Following Disney’s Latest Announcement

Earlier today, Disney announced plans to release some of its Disney+ series on 4K UHD and 4K Blu-ray. Among the series selected for a Collector’s Edition physical release was Obi-Wan Kenobi, the Star Wars prequel spin-off.

While news that 2022’s hit series is getting a physical media release should have been met with excitement among Star Wars fans, it was a bit of a double-edged sword as it seemingly shut the door on the potential for a second season.

In announcing the Collector’s Edition releases of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Moon Knight, and Andor, Disney referred to these as “The Complete First Season” of each series. However, Obi-Wan Kenobi was billed as “The Complete Series.”

The pretty straightforward phrasing seemingly confirms that Obi-Wan Kenobi will remain a standalone limited series with no hope for a second season.

This unfortunate realization comes on the heels of Ewan McGregor recently telling a MegaCon Orlando audience that he’s still hoping for the opportunity to create a second season. “Let’s hope they do another one,” McGregor said. “Can everyone write to Disney?”

Prior to his MegaCon appearance, McGregor also expressed a willingness to do a second season when speaking to Variety. But he noted, “there’s no talk of it yet.”

Kathleen Kennedy, President of Lucasfilm, has been pretty adamant in the past that Obi-Wan Kenobi wouldn’t be getting a second season; however, she has left open the opportunity for the character to return in other forms. Speaking to Variety back in 2023, Kennedy stated:

“But I never say never, because there’s always the possibility. That show was so well-received and [director] Deborah Chow did such a spectacular job. Ewan McGregor really wants to do another. Everybody’s all hands on deck with what we’re doing right now, as you can see by what we showed everybody [at the Celebration]. We’ll turn our attention to that again maybe down the road.”
