Speculation Mounts That The Man Of Steel Will Face Evil Doppelgänger In James Gunn’s Reboot

DC Studios has assembled an impressive cast for SUPERMAN, but the only villain in the reboot right now is Nicholas Hoult’s Lex Luthor. We’ve seen the Man of Tomorrow battle the LexCorp CEO on screen on countless occasions, so how will this movie differ?

Some believe Lex will finally don his formidable power suit, giving Superman a version of the baddie he can go toe-to-toe with.

Now, though, there are rumblings online – in the form of hints shared on social media by the usual suspects – that SUPERMAN will feature the Son of Krypton battling an evil doppelgänger.

While we’ve been unable to verify this rumour, the consensus seems to be that Luthor creates his own Superman (cloned from the real deal’s DNA) who is then unleashed on Metropolis. Does this mean we’re getting Bizarro? It’s too soon to say and, even if we do, there’s no guarantee that he’ll resemble the version from the comics.

Still, Bizarro does feel like a fitting choice of villain for a James Gunn-helmed SUPERMAN movie and it’s definitely a departure both from what we’ve seen in the DCEU and previous iterations of Clark Kent on the big screen.

Supes has squared off with evil versions of himself in Smallville and Superman & Lois, but this reboot will be targeting a much larger audience than either of those TV shows so that’s unlikely to matter.

Most fans wanted Brainiac in the new DCU, though there’s always time for that down the line seeing as Gunn likely has at least a few sequel ideas in the back of his mind. We’ll see what happens!

“[SUPERMAN] is the true foundation of our creative vision for the DC Universe,” Gunn said last year when the DCU slate was revealed. “Not only is Superman an iconic part of DC lore, he is also a favorite character for comic book readers, viewers of earlier movies, and fans around the world.”

“I can’t wait to introduce our version of Superman who audiences will be able to follow and get to know across films, movies, animation and gaming.”

SUPERMAN tells the story of Superman’s journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

David Corenswet is playing the Man of Steel, while Rachel Brosnahan has been tapped to star as Lois Lane.

The movie’s supporting cast includes Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer, Sara Sampaio as Eve Teschmacher, Skyler Gisondo as Jimmy Olsen, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White.

SUPERMAN is currently set to be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.
